Sometimes it is hard to find just the right gift for that specific family member or friend in your life. Handmade gifts can be treasured for years and feel more personal than an online order. What makes it better is you can involve your children to make crafts and other items and use it as a fun way to encourage speech and language development. If you do not think of yourself as a crafty person, crafting stores have prepared kits to make ornaments, decorations, picture frames and other ideas. If your child is older, there are candle, soap, or jewelry-making kits to try. They can learn to crochet a scarf, embroider a pillow case or kitchen towel, paint a canvas or pottery at a pottery shop.
While doing any of these crafts, your child can practice their articulation words five times each or make up their own sentences with the target word before completing another piece of the craft. Following directions, whether written or verbal is enhanced and expressive language can be encouraged through the child explaining the directions or description of their craft to you.
